For years, I was searching. I didn’t fully know what I was looking for, but I felt it. A quiet sense of dis-ease. Something missing. Unresolved.
Every now and then, I would give it a name. It’s a relationship I’m in. It’s my work. It’s my health. It’s my family. These are the reasons I’m feeling unsettled. There was always something to solve, a bad habit I needed to break before I could be at peace.
This led me to explore personal growth and development. I read books. I took courses. I studied psychology, life sciences and behaviour. I listened, learned and absorbed. And beneath all of it, there was a quiet hope: Somewhere out there is something or someone who knows. Someone who can unlock my personal mastery. Something that would create the change. Someone who could help me make sense of it all. A guru.
If I’m honest, I knew that wasn’t entirely true. Rationally, I understood that no one could hand me a perfect answer. No one could “fix” this modern trance of feeling disconnected. And yet… I kept searching. Because the dream of it is powerful. The idea that someone else holds the clarity we don’t yet have.
Looking back now, I don’t regret any of it. Because none of it was wasted. All the reading, the learning, the searching. It gave me something far more valuable than answers. It gave me insight. It taught me about reflection, self-awareness and the benefits of mindful living. It pushed me to ask better questions. It took me beyond surface-level problems and into something deeper.
I started exploring not just my circumstances, but myself. My mind. My body. My patterns. My beliefs. My spirit. And somewhere along the way, something shifted. I stopped looking for the guru out there. And I started recognising the one within me.
That, I believe, is the real meaning of self development. Not to find the answer outside of yourself. But to build a relationship with your Self and find your own answers. To develop your ability to discern. What feels true for me? What fits my life? What aligns with the person I am designing myself to become?
There is no single guru with the answer you’re looking for. There can’t be. You are too complex. Too nuanced. Too uniquely shaped by your experiences. The answer isn’t simple and it isn’t universal. It’s personal.
And yet, in the fast-paced whirlwind of distractions, we forget this. We follow voices. We adopt frameworks. We move from one trend to the next, for the body, the mind, the spirit. Always searching for the next thing that will “fix” us. We become consumers of wisdom, instead of creators of mindful living. We become believers, instead of discerners.
But real growth asks something different of us. It asks us to pause. To listen. To question. Not just what is being said, but what is true for me and how this impacts the development of the self in society.
The work is not to find the perfect guru. The work is to become someone who can recognise truth within themselves. To trust it. To refine it. To live it.

A simple Blume practice: Daily habits for success
The next time you come across advice, guidance, or a “breakthrough” idea, pause before you adopt it. Ask yourself:
- Does this resonate with me, or am I hoping it will fix something?
- Where does this fit in my life and where doesn’t it?
- What do I actually think about this?
Because the goal is not to collect more answers. It’s to strengthen your relationship with your own inner north star. Your inner guru is not something you find. It’s something you build through learning how to develop good habits.
